You build a draft on nights like this. Kalel Mullings had no business being available in the 235th overall pick, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
The cost of the Williams reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Spending an early pick on linebacker with interior defensive lineman and quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
In the end it comes back to Tetairoa McMillan, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Fair-plus on Landon Jackson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Jihaad Campbell still on the board at Round 3, Pick 3. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jake Majors in pick 84 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached into another round for Jack Nelson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
Andrew Mukuba in the 103rd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Danny Stutsman while clear needs at interior defensive lineman and quarterback sat open.
A premium they did not need to pay, Domani Jackson a notch or two before his time. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A big swing on Emery Jones Jr. at pick No. 138, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nicholas Singleton at pick 219 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Oronde Gadsden II at the 220th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Kalel Mullings in Round 7, Pick 19 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached a country mile for Gentry Williams at the 238th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
