The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jihaad Campbell, the No. 125 name on the board, in the 207th pick. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
The Slackman reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
It is not that Barron is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
Hit on Nick Emmanwori and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
Nick Emmanwori slid further than he should have, and slot 26 is lovely value for the safety. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A want over a need in Round 2, Pick 1: Jahdae Barron adds a safety while wide receiver, cornerback and other spots keeps waiting.
Kenneth Grant at No. 50 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Alfred Collins in the 77th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Kaleb Johnson all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
TreVeyon Henderson in pick No. 151 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Donovan Jackson at pick 155 when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Fernando Carmona in the 169th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A wild overpay on PJ Williams in No. 170, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tonka Hemingway in the 172nd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Joey Slackman at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They robbed the room for Jonah Coleman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They will replay Jihaad Campbell at Round 6, Pick 32 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let a tight end like Gunnar Helm reach slot 209 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for Terrance Ferguson at pick 232, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
