The Cowboys did not so much draft Noah Thomas as overpay for him, 158 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Lawson. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 13 they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jack Sawyer in the 44th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 14 is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taking Deontae Lawson in No. 150 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; DJ Campbell in slot 169 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A wild overpay on Savion Williams in the 170th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow Smael Mondon Jr. was still sitting there in slot 171, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Noah Thomas at pick 190, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Ollie Gordon II in the 209th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
