Thirty-one other rooms let Nicholas Singleton slide, and the Cowboys were the ones holding the card at slot 209. Highway robbery. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Omarion Hampton at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
Andrew Mukuba in slot 76 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Circle this one: Deontae Lawson at the 150th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Lathan Ransom in pick 169 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Parker Brailsford at pick No. 170 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dani Dennis-Sutton in Round 5, Pick 33 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Lander Barton in No. 188 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Nicholas Singleton all the way to Round 6, Pick 34, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
