They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: J.J. Weaver, 136 picks early at pick No. 209. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
The Reid value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get a long-term starter on the line, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
DJ Campbell at slot 42 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Kaleb Johnson all the way to Round 3, Pick 11, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 149th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nazir Stackhouse at No. 169 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Phillip Webb in the Round 5 slot, miles early. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Karene Reid in No. 186 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Lathan Ransom in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They reached into another round for J.J. Weaver, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Somehow Jaishawn Barham was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 12, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
