There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Jimmy Horn Jr. a full 135 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They banked enough surplus on Ransom to cover a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 14th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They reached a country mile for TreVeyon Henderson at the Round 2 slot, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Carson Beck in pick No. 76 says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Mason Taylor at pick 151 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for Antwane Wells Jr. at No. 168 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jimmy Horn Jr. at slot 170 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board fumbled Jake Majors all the way to the 171st overall pick, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 190 is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Shilo Sanders well ahead of where he belonged. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
