The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Cam Skattebo, the No. 114 name on the board, sitting there at the 209th pick like a gift left on the doorstep. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The cost of the Nash reach is exactly the players who went right after him. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 12 they get a three-down runner at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Jayden Higgins at the Round 2 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nothing to complain about; Gunnar Helm went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled Danny Stutsman all the way to Round 5, Pick 11, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
You do not let a safety like Michael Taaffe reach the 168th overall pick and blink. They did not. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They will replay Jake Majors at slot 170 for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Deontae Lawson at pick 173 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nick Nash in the 186th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at the 209th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow Karene Reid was still sitting there in No. 247, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
