The Chargers spent real capital to be 121 picks early on Michael Barrett, and the board is going to hold them to it.

So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake. The Wallace pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
