Call it larceny. Cam Skattebo sat on the board until the Round 6 slot, and the Texans did not need to be asked twice. It washes out to a C, no better and no worse.
Every board in the league had Crenshaw-Dickson lower, and that gap is the story. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
So much rides on Tate Ratledge that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
Tate Ratledge at the 25th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board fumbled Tyler Booker all the way to Round 2, Pick 29, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Rylie Mills at Round 3, Pick 25 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Howard Cross III at pick No. 107 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Danny Stutsman at the 126th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson in slot 164 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at the 206th pick is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A big swing on Elijhah Badger at No. 223, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Jordan Hancock in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
Value said wait; Trey Wedig in pick 241 says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Garrett Dellinger this early at Round 7, Pick 28. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Karene Reid at No. 247 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tight end of that caliber at the 248th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
