The Dolphins spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Smael Mondon Jr., the No. 108 name on the board, in No. 157.
They will need Mahlman to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback and edge rusher went begging.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Emeka Egbuka in the Round 2 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Andrew Mukuba was still sitting there in pick No. 98, and they pounced on premier safety value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Malachi Moore while clear needs at quarterback and edge rusher sat open.
Omarr Norman-Lott at slot 114 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A running back of that caliber at the 148th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Smael Mondon Jr. at the 157th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy little value on Clay Webb in pick 225, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
They talked themselves into Riley Mahlman at the 231st overall pick, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Jackson Hawes still on the board at pick No. 251. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
