There is reaching, and then there is Javontez Spraggins at Round 7, Pick 11. The Dolphins jumped the board by 66 and dared it to prove them wrong.
On value alone, Mondon Jr. makes the weekend a net positive. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback went begging.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a wrecking ball inside, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Ashton Gillotte in the 47th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Elic Ayomanor in pick 98 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Somehow Andrew Mukuba was still sitting there in the 99th pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Malachi Moore at safety with quarterback open.
Nicholas Singleton in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Smael Mondon Jr. in the 157th overall pick, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Javontez Spraggins at pick 225 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Clay Webb at pick No. 231. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
You do not let a tight end like Jackson Hawes reach No. 251 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
