If confidence were a draft strategy, the Dolphins would have aced it. Trey Wedig at pick No. 231 is 72 spots clear of where he belonged. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The Mondon Jr. value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
It is not that Winston Jr. is a bad player; it is that the Dolphins had louder needs to answer first. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
T.J. Sanders in Round 2, Pick 15 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Elic Ayomanor at par in pick No. 98, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Andrew Mukuba in pick 99 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A curious use of the Round 4 slot. Quarterback and edge rusher needed the pick; a safety in Kevin Winston Jr. did not.
Somehow Nicholas Singleton was still sitting there in slot 148, and they pounced on premier running back value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Steal is underselling it; Smael Mondon Jr. at the 157th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for Javontez Spraggins, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on Trey Wedig in the 231st pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They will replay Jackson Hawes at pick 251 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
