There is reaching, and then there is Myles Hinton at Round 7, Pick 18. The Dolphins jumped the board by 93 and dared it to prove them wrong. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Mondon Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid a round early for Kenneth Grant in Round 1, Pick 12, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had cheaper options than Alfred Collins at pick 48, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A safety of that caliber at slot 98 is the definition of value, full stop. A minor itch, scratched.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Kevin Winston Jr. in the 99th overall pick leaves quarterback, edge rusher and other spots for later.
Kyren Lacy in the 115th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nicholas Singleton at No. 149 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Smael Mondon Jr. all the way to slot 156, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Javontez Spraggins in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Myles Hinton at pick 232 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A real head-scratcher, Fentrell Cypress II in the 251st overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
