The Commanders did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Deontae Lawson fell into No. 236. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. The veteran additions, Blake Fisher chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 29th pick they get a press-man option on the boundary, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Steal is underselling it; Walter Nolen at pick No. 60 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jack Sawyer in pick 61 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
Circle this one: Ashton Jeanty at the Round 3 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Tre Harris in No. 91, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ajani Cornelius in slot 93 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Wyatt Milum here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let an edge rusher like Jordan Burch reach the 130th overall pick and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jordan Hancock in Round 6, Pick 16 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A safety of that caliber at the 203rd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Somehow Deontae Lawson was still sitting there in pick No. 236, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Josaiah Stewart at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
