You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Commanders did exactly that with Tyler Batty in the 239th overall pick.
The Gordon II pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick-by-Pick
They talked themselves into Tyler Warren at Round 1, Pick 28, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Malaki Starks at slot 50 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jonah Savaiinaea in the 93rd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tyleik Williams at the 97th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Steal is underselling it; Harold Perkins Jr. at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A slide stopped in pick 150, with Zy Alexander worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached a country mile for Deion Burks at pick 164, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ollie Gordon II in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached into another round for Tyler Batty, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Barrett Carter in slot 245, plain and simple. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
