Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent Round 7, Pick 1 on Steven Parker, a name most had 113 spots down the list.
Smith at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get juice off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
The board had Emeka Egbuka higher than the Round 2 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for Denzel Burke at pick No. 69, and the board is aghast. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid up for Ozzy Trapilo at pick 77 when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
TreVeyon Henderson in No. 105 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nothing to complain about; Rylie Mills went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A big swing on Steven Parker at the 219th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Brashard Smith in the 222nd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Somehow Andres Borregales was still sitting there in slot 240, and they pounced on premier specialist value. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
