Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent pick 220 on Collin Oliver, a name the board had a full 72 spots lower.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Lachey falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
A slide stopped in No. 56, with Aireontae Ersery worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Tre Harris in slot 62; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jalen Royals at the 69th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Mason Taylor at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
A conviction pick on Jacob Parrish at the 106th overall pick that the board grades a round light. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Bhayshul Tuten at the 144th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Luke Lachey in pick No. 217. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value said wait; Collin Oliver in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tidy little value on Isaac TeSlaa in No. 238, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
