There is reaching, and then there is Barryn Sorrell at pick No. 219. The Patriots jumped the board by 92 and dared it to prove them wrong. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
Taylor falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Tyler Booker in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
They took Deone Walker at par in No. 69, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Maxwell Hairston at pick 77, value and slot in agreement. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They liked Anthony Belton enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 105. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had Jack Nelson higher than the 145th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Barryn Sorrell at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 222nd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Moliki Matavao in No. 240 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
