There is reaching, and then there is Howard Cross III at the Round 4 slot. The Texans jumped the board by 87 and dared it to prove them wrong.
That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They banked enough surplus on Tuten to cover a lot of smaller sins. They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a load in the middle. The biggest hole, addressed.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 58, where Kaleb Johnson graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Dylan Fairchild at No. 89 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Howard Cross III in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Bhayshul Tuten is a better player than Round 5, Pick 28 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Hunter Wohler in the 243rd pick, and that is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
