There is reaching, and then there is Karsen Barnhart at slot 256. The Chargers jumped the board by 30 and dared it to prove them wrong. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Getting Foster where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 7 they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Kris Jenkins in the 37th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Blake Corum at slot 69 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Beau Brade went about where he belonged in the 106th overall pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Kris Abrams-Draine in No. 119 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid up for Drake Nugent at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Javon Foster at the 151st pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Barrett. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A straight-up fair deal on Josh Wallace at Round 7, Pick 3, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Karsen Barnhart in No. 256 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
