Nobody had DJ Uiagalelei this high, and it is not close. The Commanders reached 156 spots to get him at pick 73.
Whatever Shedeur Sanders becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Their trades came out a wash either way.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a franchise quarterback, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
Patrick Payton at slot 36 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached into another round for DJ Uiagalelei, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid a round early for Malachi Moore in the 100th overall pick, more than the board wanted. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A big swing on Terrence Ferguson II at the 113th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into Francisco Mauigoa at No. 145, and the board did not agree. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Xavier Truss at slot 164 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Mason Taylor in pick 174 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jake Johnson at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
