The Cowboys clearly saw something nobody else did in Akheem Mesidor, taking him 114 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
The Carter pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 20 they get a run-stuffing presence up front, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
They will replay Jalon Walker at the 44th pick for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Quinn Ewers at the 51st overall pick, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Good price on Deone Walker in pick No. 76, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Tai Felton in pick 85 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 148 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Devin Neal in Round 5, Pick 31 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Barrett Carter at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at No. 173 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jahvaree Ritzie well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached into another round for Tonka Hemingway, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Connor Colby reach pick 195 and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Akheem Mesidor at the 209th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A minor itch, scratched.
A wild overpay on J.J. Weaver in the 248th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
