Somebody in the Round 6 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Tyler Shough, the No. 136 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They are betting Ritzie proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A conviction pick on Kyle Kennard at the 55th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Deone Walker at No. 63, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
TreVeyon Henderson at Round 3, Pick 12 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Taking Kyle McCord in pick No. 149 is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cody Simon in pick 158 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Somehow Darius Alexander was still sitting there in slot 159, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They robbed the room for Logan Brown here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a running back like Bhayshul Tuten reach slot 171 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
Tyler Cooper in Round 5, Pick 36 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tyler Shough in pick No. 188 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jahvaree Ritzie in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value with a capital V on LaJohntay Wester in pick 247, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jordan Hancock at No. 250 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
