The war room fell hard for Tyreak Sapp, and it showed at the Round 5 slot: 119 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
So much rides on Cameron Williams that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a long-term starter on the line, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jack Sawyer in the Round 2 slot. It adds depth where they could use a little.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Shemar Turner in Round 3, Pick 10, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Ar'maj Reed-Adams at the 148th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Somehow Smael Mondon Jr. was still sitting there in slot 168, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Savion Williams in pick 170 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Tyreak Sapp at the 171st overall pick, and the board did not agree. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ollie Gordon II at pick No. 186. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Jordan Hancock still on the board at Round 6, Pick 34. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
