Call it belief, call it a gut call, but R.J. Oben at pick 249 is 158 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 12 they get a matchup problem out wide, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They did well to land Jihaad Campbell in Round 2, Pick 12, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Steal is underselling it; Malaki Starks at No. 76 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board fumbled Hollin Pierce all the way to slot 150, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cam Jackson at the 170th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They went early on JJ Pegues in the Round 5 slot, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Jaishawn Barham in pick No. 174, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Hayden Conner this early at the Round 6 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Trevor Etienne a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, R.J. Oben well ahead of where he belonged. It adds depth where they could use a little.
