The Jay Toia selection is the head-turner. The Cowboys reached 154 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
That Lawson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They did well to land Jack Sawyer in pick 42, just ahead of his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A big swing on Alfred Collins at pick No. 73, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Deontae Lawson all the way to the 149th overall pick, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid up for Donovan Jackson at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A real head-scratcher, Quinn Carroll in No. 170 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jay Toia this early at the Round 5 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Ollie Gordon II at Round 6, Pick 11 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kyren Lacy well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
