The Tony Grimes pick is the one that will follow the Packers into the fall. They took him 112 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Packers indulged a want in Mondon Jr. while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The back end got a real overhaul.
If Benjamin Morrison and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
A reach on Benjamin Morrison in slot 34; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Donovan Jackson this early at the 58th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Danny Stutsman in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Smael Mondon Jr. in No. 91 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
They went early on Billy Bowman Jr. in Round 4, Pick 2, and the value did not follow. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A real head-scratcher, Raheim Sanders in pick No. 127 is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A big swing on Tony Grimes at No. 162, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
