The Packers bet big and early on Mitchell Evans, 65 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Put together, it is a D-.
Getting Stutsman where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 29 they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
Donovan Jackson at the 56th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid a round early for Jared Ivey in pick No. 66, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Jalen Royals at No. 70, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Daylen Everette. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value said wait; Billy Bowman Jr. in slot 92 says they were not listening. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They reached into another round for DeMonte Capehart, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
Nice patience on Jack Nelson, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 24. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Danny Stutsman at pick 159 for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Davison Igbinosun at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Hunter Wohler in the 237th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They reached a country mile for Mitchell Evans at the 250th overall pick, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
