The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: James Burnip, the No. 164 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 7 slot like a gift left on the doorstep.
The Wohler reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left edge rusher open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 27 they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
They jumped the gun on Benjamin Morrison, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jalen Royals in slot 59 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach for Donovan Jackson in the Round 3 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Azareye'h Thomas at pick 91 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Billy Bowman Jr. at the 98th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Taking Danny Stutsman in No. 114 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They robbed the room for Dylan Sampson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A tidy bit of business in the 158th overall pick, where Mitchell Evans graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Hunter Wohler this early at the Round 6 slot. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A slide stopped in pick No. 237, with Jaishawn Barham worth more than the price. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
James Burnip at pick 250 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
