The rest of the league had time to spare on Keaten Wade; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 119 spots ahead at Round 7, Pick 36. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is McNeil-Warren.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. Their trades came out a wash either way.
If Blake Miller and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
The board had cheaper options than Blake Miller at No. 35, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at pick No. 63 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jacob Rodriguez at the 66th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Sam Roush at slot 101 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Dametrious Crownover in the 131st overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, Charles Demmings at pick 144 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They reached into another round for Patrick Payton, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A quiet steal in slot 198: Jeff Caldwell for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jack Kelly at the 247th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Adam Randall. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
