There is reaching, and then there is Trey Holly at the 247th pick. The Patriots jumped the board by 77 and dared it to prove them wrong.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 31 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jacob Rodriguez at the Round 2 slot is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Sam Roush at No. 95, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Dametrious Crownover at Round 4, Pick 25 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Oscar Delp in the 131st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
By-the-book stuff, Aamil Wagner at slot 171 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
VJ Payne at the Round 6 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Thaddeus Dixon in pick 212 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A minor itch, scratched.
Adam Randall in slot 215 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Trey Holly in Round 7, Pick 31 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
