The Cowboys did not so much draft Jacob Rodriguez as overpay for him, 33 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They banked enough surplus on McAlister to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 12 they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Jacob Rodriguez at the 39th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Treydan Stukes in Round 3, Pick 28 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good price on Bud Clark in pick 107, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No edge and no loss on Taurean York in pick No. 112; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nothing to complain about; Isaiah World went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Kaleb Elarms-Orr went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Seth McGowan in the 180th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Eric McAlister still on the board at slot 218. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
