You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Fernando Carmona in No. 138. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C.
On value alone, Delane makes the weekend a net positive. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
So much rides on Joshua Josephs that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Tim Keenan III at the 58th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Justin Joly in pick No. 127 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Sam Hecht at the 133rd overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Fernando Carmona in Round 4, Pick 38, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Mansoor Delane in slot 139 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
