The Malik Spencer pick is the one that will follow the Commanders into the fall. They took him 158 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
That Hill Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
So much rides on Blake Miller that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Circle this one: Anthony Hill Jr. at pick 71 is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Mason Reiger at the 147th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
They reached a country mile for Ricardo Hallman at slot 187, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jeff Caldwell at No. 209 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value said wait; Malik Spencer in the 217th pick says they were not listening. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Logan Taylor this early at the Round 7 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
