You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Dolphins did exactly that with Raul Aguirre Jr. in Round 3, Pick 26. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C+.
Ty Simpson gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. The Rutledge pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 11 they get the face of the franchise, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a bendy edge with upside, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
They reached a country mile for Luke Hasz at the 75th pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Dijon Johnson in pick No. 87 says they were not listening. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A big swing on Raul Aguirre Jr. at the 90th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Kage Casey at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay Keylan Rutledge at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Dane Key at the 151st overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached into another round for Le'Veon Moss, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Carson Hinzman in slot 185 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A wild overpay on Deven Eastern in the 218th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Josh Cuevas at pick No. 227 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Somehow Landon Robinson was still sitting there in pick 238, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
