Nobody had Tyler Onyedim this high, and it is not close. The Cowboys reached 56 spots to get him at the 218th overall pick. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. With cornerback, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on edge rusher is the choice that costs them. Allen falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a centerpiece for the ground game, and a steal at that.
In No. 20 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, reach and all. Need was not the driver here.
Kyle Louis in Round 3, Pick 28 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Mason Reiger adds an edge rusher and leaves cornerback, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Value said wait; Nyjalik Kelly in the 152nd pick says they were not listening. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cyrus Allen at the Round 5 slot is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Kobe Baynes in the Round 5 slot, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tyler Onyedim at pick No. 218 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
