Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Steelers.

Nobody had Carson Beck this high, and it is not close. The Steelers reached 60 spots to get him at No. 53.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Slaughter. Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with interior defensive lineman and edge rusher open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.21 · Pick 21 · Monroe Freeling · OT · rank 26
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Carson Beck · QB · rank 113
Carson Beck at the 53rd pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Skyler Bell · WR · rank 83
Skyler Bell at Round 3, Pick 12 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
R3.21 · Pick 85 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 55
A curious use of pick 85. Interior defensive lineman and edge rusher needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Jake Slaughter did not.
R3.35 · Pick 99 · Zakee Wheatley · S · rank 85
Zakee Wheatley is a better player than No. 99 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.21 · Pick 121 · Jack Endries · TE · rank 114
Jack Endries in slot 121 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Will Lee III · CB · rank 118
The board had Will Lee III higher than the 135th overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.21 · Pick 161 · Demond Claiborne · RB · rank 157
They did well to land Demond Claiborne in Round 5, Pick 21, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.35 · Pick 216 · Aiden Fisher · LB · rank 221
No edge and no loss on Aiden Fisher in No. 216; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.8 · Pick 224 · Luke Altmyer · QB · rank 236
They jumped the gun on Luke Altmyer, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.14 · Pick 230 · Owen Heinecke · DB · rank 241
Owen Heinecke at pick No. 230 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
R7.21 · Pick 237 · Logan Taylor · OG · rank 258
They reached a country mile for Logan Taylor at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
