The 49ers put a flag in the ground for Jeff Caldwell, 54 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. On value alone, Zuhn III makes the weekend a net positive. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Eli Stowers at pick No. 58 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Billy Schrauth went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Nadame Tucker at slot 133, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A real head-scratcher, Jeff Caldwell in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Trey Zuhn III at the 139th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They did well to land Chris McClellan in Round 5, Pick 9, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Andre Fuller at No. 248 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A minor itch, scratched.
