If confidence were a draft strategy, the Dolphins would have aced it. Roman Hemby at the 212th overall pick is 141 spots clear of where he belonged. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
McNeil-Warren at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will answer for taking safety early while interior defensive lineman and linebacker went begging.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 31st overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Nice patience on Dillon Thieneman, who had no business lasting to pick 43. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Circle this one: D'Angelo Ponds at the 75th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
By-the-book stuff, Ted Hurst at slot 87 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in Round 3, Pick 26 leaves interior defensive lineman and linebacker for later.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Keionte Scott at cornerback with interior defensive lineman and linebacker open.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mikail Kamara well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Drew Allar at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Aamil Wagner this early at pick No. 151. The roster fit checks out.
They reached into another round for Pat Coogan, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Roman Hemby at the 212th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They did well to land Miles Kitselman in the 227th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Andre Fuller at pick 238 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
