Miami Dolphins

Best value of the weekend goes to the Dolphins for Slaughter: C+.

You could see the war room lean forward. Jake Slaughter at Round 3, Pick 30 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.

The Eastern pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

So much rides on Gabe Jacas that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.11 · Pick 43 · Gabe Jacas · LB-EDGE · rank 62
Gabe Jacas at the 43rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Dani Dennis-Sutton · DE-EDGE · rank 82
Dani Dennis-Sutton in Round 2, Pick 18 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Skyler Bell · WR · rank 83
A reach for Skyler Bell in the 75th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.30 · Pick 94 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 55
Jake Slaughter at slot 94 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Bryce Lance · WR · rank 122
They paid a round early for Bryce Lance in No. 108, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Jaeden Roberts · OG · rank 146
They paid up for Jaeden Roberts at pick 130 when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.11 · Pick 151 · Louis Moore · S · rank 159
Louis Moore at the Round 5 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Charles Demmings · CB · rank 228
Charles Demmings at pick No. 238 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R7.27 · Pick 243 · Nick Barrett · DL · rank 251
Nick Barrett in pick 243 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.32 · Pick 248 · Deven Eastern · DL · rank 281
Deven Eastern at slot 248 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.39 · Pick 255 · Jalon Daniels · QB · rank 256
Jalon Daniels at No. 255 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.41 · Pick 257 · Adam Randall · RB · rank 276
A big swing on Adam Randall at the 257th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
