The Dolphins clearly saw something nobody else did in Fa'alili Fa'amoe, taking him 54 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The McNeil-Warren pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. With interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
The trade work was a quiet net positive.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chris Johnson. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, Blake Miller went about where he belonged in slot 38. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Emmanuel Pregnon at No. 43 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Dani Dennis-Sutton in pick 59, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Emmanuel McNeil-Warren here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Ja'Kobi Lane in the 87th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Zakee Wheatley in the 90th pick leaves interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots for later.
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots to take Treydan Stukes, a cornerback that was not the priority.
They paid a round early for Isaiah World in Round 4, Pick 30, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Drew Allar in No. 151, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Fa'alili Fa'amoe in pick No. 188, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Riley Nowakowski at pick 227 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Thaddeus Dixon at slot 238 for years; that is how good the value is. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
