You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Isaiah World in the 27th pick.
However the rest shakes out, Ponds at that price is a win they earned. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Hit on Isaiah World and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a building block for the line, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Max Iheanachor at slot 58. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached a country mile for Vincent Anthony Jr. at No. 127, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
A quiet steal in the Round 4 slot: Billy Schrauth for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jacob Rodriguez in pick No. 138, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
D'Angelo Ponds in the 139th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
