The Dolphins looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Blake Shapen at pick No. 151 regardless, 258 picks early.
The Golday pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Drew Allar gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Job largely done: quarterback settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a cornerstone up front, though the board says they badly overpaid.
In pick 30 they get a franchise quarterback, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They talked themselves into Isaac Smith at slot 43, and the board did not agree. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Sam Hecht in the 75th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached a country mile for Roydell Williams at No. 87, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
KC Concepcion at Round 3, Pick 26 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, DJ Harvey well ahead of where he belonged. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jake Golday at the 130th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Blake Shapen in pick No. 151, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Josh Cuevas at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Keyshaun Elliott in the 238th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
