You build a draft on nights like this. Logan Jones had no business being available in slot 244, and the Vikings did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
They are betting Barber proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
If Austin Barber and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 18th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Harold Perkins Jr. at slot 49 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Value said wait; Gracen Halton in the 82nd pick says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A cornerback of that caliber at the Round 3 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Chris McClellan at pick No. 163 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
You do not let a wide receiver like Brenen Thompson reach pick 196 and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Zavion Thomas slipping to Round 7, Pick 18 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
Lander Barton in No. 235 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They will replay Logan Jones at slot 244 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
