The Saints clearly saw something nobody else did in Trey Moore, taking him 49 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 8 they get a weapon on the perimeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A wild overpay on Zachariah Branch in the 42nd overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Treydan Stukes at No. 73 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trey Moore this early at the Round 4 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Oscar Delp at the 136th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It fills a real need, too.
Beau Stephens at Round 5, Pick 10 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Matt Gulbin at pick 172 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Zavion Thomas. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
