There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Saints started one anyway for Caden Curry, 59 picks ahead of schedule. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
If Chris Brazzell II and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 16 they get a matchup problem out wide, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A reach on Chris Bell in the Round 2 slot; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Caden Curry at the 73rd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on Charles Demmings in No. 132, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Oscar Delp in the 136th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached a country mile for Trey Moore at Round 5, Pick 10, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Matt Gulbin at the 172nd pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cole Payton a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
