Somebody in the 118th pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Jake Golday, the No. 58 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Kelly pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 31 they get a green-dot type in the middle, outstanding value to boot.
Nice patience on Jake Slaughter, who had no business lasting to pick No. 72. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They will replay Malachi Fields at the Round 3 slot for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jake Golday at the 118th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a safety like Genesis Smith reach Round 4, Pick 25 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Oscar Delp at the 131st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Kage Casey at pick 157 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Marlin Klein in No. 179 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid sticker price for Jeff Caldwell in slot 189, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Keagen Trost in the 191st overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nothing to complain about; VJ Payne went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kaelon Black in No. 212 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Keyshaun Elliott in pick 228 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They went early on Jack Kelly in the 247th pick, and the value did not follow. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
The board fumbled TJ Hall all the way to Round 7, Pick 35, and they scooped it up. A minor itch, scratched.
