Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Tony Rojas at pick 256 is 113 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. For now it grades a C, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
The Slaughter steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
D'Angelo Ponds slid further than he should have, and the 63rd overall pick is lovely value for the cornerback. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Christen Miller was still sitting there in pick No. 84, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They barely believed it either: Jake Slaughter still on the board at the 120th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cade Klubnik a notch or two before his time. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value with a capital V on Kaytron Allen in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Patrick Payton at Round 5, Pick 38 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They did well to land Red Murdock in Round 6, Pick 20, just ahead of his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Colbie Young in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, Josh Cuevas went about where he belonged in the 255th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Tony Rojas in pick No. 256 says they were not listening. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Diego Pavia at slot 257 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
