Nobody else had Riley Mahlman anywhere near the 255th pick. The Packers did, by 43 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It washes out to a C, no better and no worse.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Stribling steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
Gennings Dunker in Round 2, Pick 23 lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Keylan Rutledge in slot 76 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Davison Igbinosun in the 86th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They let Tacario Davis come to them and pounced at pick 120. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on DeMonte Capehart in the 121st overall pick, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
De'Zhaun Stribling in pick No. 123 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nate Boerkircher at pick No. 135 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Beau Stephens in No. 160 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Demond Claiborne went about where he belonged in the 162nd pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Domani Jackson. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A real head-scratcher, VJ Payne in Round 5, Pick 34 is miles ahead of his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A wild overpay on Robert Spears-Jennings in the 201st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Bryce Foster. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A big swing on Riley Mahlman at slot 255, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
