Green Bay Packers

The phones sank the Packers this weekend: C.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Riley Mahlman a full 43 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.

On value alone, Golday makes the weekend a net positive. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.

A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.

Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.23 · Pick 55 · Gennings Dunker · OG · rank 51
Good price on Gennings Dunker in No. 55, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Keylan Rutledge · OG · rank 79
Value said wait; Keylan Rutledge in the 59th overall pick says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
R3.22 · Pick 86 · Davison Igbinosun · CB · rank 80
Davison Igbinosun at pick No. 86 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.23 · Pick 87 · Daylen Everette · CB · rank 83
A reasonable price with a little left over, Daylen Everette in the 87th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.34 · Pick 98 · Jake Golday · OLB · rank 62
Circle this one: Jake Golday at pick 98 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Bryce Lance · WR · rank 96
Somehow Bryce Lance was still sitting there in Round 4, Pick 14, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · Sam Roush · TE · rank 94
Sam Roush in the 120th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.23 · Pick 123 · DeMonte Capehart · DT · rank 138
They jumped the gun on DeMonte Capehart, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.37 · Pick 137 · Nate Boerkircher · TE · rank 163
Nate Boerkircher at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.13 · Pick 153 · Demond Claiborne · RB · rank 164
Demond Claiborne in pick 153 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.20 · Pick 160 · Kage Casey · OT · rank 161
A straight-up fair deal on Kage Casey at slot 160, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.20 · Pick 201 · VJ Payne · S · rank 200
VJ Payne in pick No. 201 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.20 · Pick 236 · Bryce Foster · C · rank 260
Bryce Foster at Round 7, Pick 20 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
R7.39 · Pick 255 · Riley Mahlman · OT · rank 298
They reached into another round for Riley Mahlman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
