There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Riley Mahlman a full 43 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
On value alone, Golday makes the weekend a net positive. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
Good price on Gennings Dunker in No. 55, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value said wait; Keylan Rutledge in the 59th overall pick says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Davison Igbinosun at pick No. 86 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Daylen Everette in the 87th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Circle this one: Jake Golday at pick 98 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Somehow Bryce Lance was still sitting there in Round 4, Pick 14, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Sam Roush in the 120th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
They jumped the gun on DeMonte Capehart, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nate Boerkircher at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Demond Claiborne in pick 153 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Kage Casey at slot 160, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
VJ Payne in pick No. 201 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
